Topic:  Design Change...static images

Hi all, some of you may have noticed that things are slightly different in the Topo Library as of this week; we have recently changed the way wikitopo displays topos.

The topos are now displayed as jpeg images which are generated from the original topo images plus the route data - previously topos were always displayed in the editor (ie the old topo viewer).

The main advantages of the new system are:
  • You dont need Java to see the topos so they are available to more users
  • The topos will load more quickly because you dont need to start the editor
  • You can copy and paste or save topo images for use elsewhere
  • The new jpeg based topo display is more convenient for printing out.
The slight disadvantage is that the static images don't do all the cool stuff that the applet does, like highlighting lines and zooming in and out and editing but remember - the old topo viewer is only a click away. To see it, just click on "Edit Topo". A few of the features in the old topo viewer are not yet visible in the jpegs but we are working on that.

It is likely that the new system will have some teething problems please let us know on this thread if you find any.

The topo maps are still displayed in the Java editor but we are working on a static image generator for those too.

I havent been on the site for a while so this is the firt time I have seen this. It looks good - the topos load very quickly now but I wonder if the lines could be a diferent colour or if the colour could be changed to suit the background images? Sometimes they are a bit fuzzy - especially in the smaller display.

I am working on this as part of a broader upgrade to the Topo Library and Editor - some exciting new features on the way!
