Any suggestions about organizing places in the topo library?... ie when is a place a location, an area or a region?
Sometimes it would be useful to have another level (or two?) . Some locations have a lot distinct crags eg Avon or are so extensive that it would be good to split them up - eg Stanage Popular.

Also when adding to a big country like Australia wouldn't it be easier if we had states a well as regions?

I have thought the same... I reckon sectors would be useful on the more extensive or complex crags, but they would have to optional (some crags can be covered in one topo). Maybe the same goes for states in large countries?

This is a good point - it is difficult to design a structure that fits everything.

A complex of crags in a small area or an extensive series of adjacent cliffs can need a lot of bits of informtion to decribe them all but making each inividual crag into a separate location isn't ideal as it is tedious to navigate in the browser.

When deciding whether a place is a location or an area, there are a few things to consider....

First, are more than a dozen or so topos needed to cover it?

Second, does it need more than one map or set of notes to describe the approaches or descents?

Third, do you find you are forced to use a  prefix in the topo names within a location to separate them into groups.

If the answer to any of these is yes, then the place is probably best defined as an area but there are two drawbacks to doing this to crags in close proximity:

1. at the moment, you can only create topos within locations so you cannot create an area overview topo.
2... at the moment you can only have one map per location.

I am considering a few changes that will make life easier.

I like the idea of adding sectors within locations but as an optional level so that topos can be contained in iether locations or sectors. I think each sector should be able to have its own sketch map. I am also thinking that it would be useful to allow topos to be contained in areas so that overviews of areas can be created although this might be unneccesary once we have sectors.

As for big countries - yes this is a problem too....
